Contemplative Caterpillar

Bridger was excited to spot this very large caterpillar one morning in September of 2010. He thought I might like to make its portrait. He was right!

A Caterpillar Contemplates... ? - September 2010

I don’t know what caterpillars contemplate in general, but this one was trying to start to spin its cocoon. Talk about an opportunity for deep contemplation, the time spent metamorphosing, wrapped in a cocoon, might just be time for deep coming-of-age thoughts!

Should we take a cue from the moth and butterfly world, and tightly wrap our teenagers in swaddling clothes to contemplate their coming of age years?

Crossing the Line

One must stay at the edge when photographing morning frost. There is a moving line.

Crossing the Line - February 2012

On one side of the line the frost crystals are pristine, sharp and clear. But they have no sparkle. On the other side of the line, they sparkle, flare… and melt.

Recalling the summer heat wave and drought

Last summer (2011), it seemed so crackly dry that there couldn’t possibly be anything left worth photographing. The temperatures were also oppressively hot, not just over 100 degrees farenheit, but around 110-112 degrees, making the idea of an outdoor venture a not so inviting idea. Still, I was itching to use my camera and glad when the thought occurred to me that I could document the effects of the drought on our little bit of land. Out I ventured and immediately found beautiful light glowing through many distressed leaves and blossoms. The beauty was still there for anyone willing to wander outside looking for it :o)
