I do not know what this plant is called. I haven’t yet looked it up, either. But I do recognize it now!

Unsolicited advice: Do not brush up against it with your bare ankle or leg. Do not drag your forearm across it when picking flowers. And definitely do NOT sit on it when taking photos! Actually, avoid sitting on it in any situation 😉

could they be stinging nettles?

The consensus seems to be stinging nettles (among my family). But they look different than the ones I grew up with, which were tall, with small lavender blooms right up against the stems, at the leaf junctions. When I googled nettles, I found that there may be as many as 39 species!
